24th May 2024
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is an important day to fight against discrimination for people who are part of the queer community. IDAHOBIT was on Friday May 17th and each day of this week, our young people heard about the impact of harassment and bullying on LGBTQIA+ people and discussed ways they can support those who are part of the queer community.
They heard how there are many gender diverse people who still can’t express themselves fully or even partially without fear of harassment and feeling unsafe.
We finished the week with a KHS flag raising ceremony which was sponsored by Kyneton Community House who provided a morning tea and rainbow merchandise. This was followed by a selection of students attending the Macedon Shire Council’s flag raising ceremony at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. It was a great day and awesome to be part of a movement towards reducing discrimination and striving for equality and love for all.

Year 7 Science
They managed to obtain from this a precious sample of very clear, (theoretically) drinkable water after a few different separation steps!
Ms Quynh
Year 7 students have been investigating types of mixtures and separation techniques in science this term. To cap off the unit, students were provided with a very dirty mixture of river water.
Humanities
In Humanities we did a wonderful source analysis, in which we had a look at some artefacts from the past, as well as the secondary sources too. It was heaps of fun, and we got to look at some of the different things from the world war that Shell brought in. Ms. Dalley helped us fill out a sheet that identified why it was what it was and different ways to tell. Everyone learnt a lot and enjoyed themselves.

Production Intensive!
The school production cast and crew headed to the Bluestone Theatre for a two-show rehearsal intensive on Friday 17 and Saturday 18th May.
The cast spent their time blocking scenes, and learning choreography & vocals while the crew learned about lighting and sound in a theatre space.
Highlights from the rehearsal time were the cast getting to wear their costumes for the first time, a tango workshop with Latin dancer Christina Diaz, and celebrating their hard work with a disco; lights and sound rigged by the backstage crew!
The students demonstrated excellence throughout the entire two days, with feedback being “that they were in their element” bonding with the students from Gisborne Secondary College.
Keep your eyes out for ticketing information as this is a show you do not want to miss out on seeing!!

presents a $1000 donation to the KHS Building Fund.
Bette is pictured with Principal Ana Rees, and Cathouse Players member Brian Fitches. Brian was a long-time teacher at Kyneton High School from 1999 to 2015; his partner Katie, also a Cathouse Player, taught here from 2005 to 2015.
Chess Meet
The Chess Meetup has been a huge success this term with many students escaping the increasingly cold weather to face off over the chessboard. Students have had the option of playing over the board or utilising Chess.com to build skills through lessons, drills and puzzles.
As the year progresses, we will have the chance to enter local interschool events and fly the flag for “thought sports” at KHS. It is evident through days like our swimming carnival that we have a wonderful base of strong players who could represent our school well in competitive chess.
While competitive chess is a possibility for those interested, the focus of the group remains as a calm, fun and wholesome meetup where students are welcome and supported to play a boardgame together and build their skills.
Chess is on Thursday recess in Boomerang 3. Students are not obliged to come regularly and can start at any time throughout the year. This is particularly important during the colder months.

Intersection Excursion
The students then participated in a Meet the Neighbour session, and we were introduced to Lisa, Elliot and Amy. The differences in experiences were fascinating to learn about, everyone was very respectful the entire time, asking brilliant questions and listening beautifully to the person speaking. Year 11 is very grateful to have been included and we thank The Intersection for having us!

Friday the third of May saw students from Years 11 and 12 VCEVM in Melbourne, asking questions, and learning about issues including homelessness, intimidation vs hospitality, domestic abuse, discrimination, the dangers of single stories, and queer experiences.
Blyth from The Intersection started the morning, with a group discussion on people experiencing homelessness and the issues they face in the CBD; she had us thinking about our own perspective, challenging the way we understand others and the world around us, asking difficult questions and listening to everyone’s different views, unjudging.
Maths Methods
Year 12 Maths Methods used trigonometric functions to model the temperature throughout the year in Wellington, NZ. Using their understanding of functions and transformations they had to find appropriate variables for their equations, and use it to comment on when someone should visit Wellington for a holiday.

Year 9 Fashion & Design
In Fashion and Design, we have been working on a sustainability and recycling project where the students have been upcycling fabrics from unwanted items that can’t be taken to the op-shop. These items were clothing such as ripped denim jeans and chambray work shirts that had company logos on them. These items of clothing have very useable fabrics in them and normally could up in landfill, so our objective was to repurpose the fabrics and turn them into fully lined tote bags. The design process for this project was to create a piece of fabric to a certain size by piecing together elements from denim jeans for functional and decorative effect. The students then have used these pieces to create their bags and have also learnt how to line a bag without exposed seams.

Profiteroles And Life
“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vale and hills
And all at once I spied a crowd
A host of golden profiteroles”
William Wordsworth
“The best remedy for those who are frightened, lonely or unhappy is to make some profiteroles. Or some pancakes, if you run out of choux pastry.”

Year 9 Outdoor Education
Report by Emily Carey
That night, we went to Belmont, near where we were staying. We got dinner and walked on the main street for a couple of hours.
The next day, there was more sailing. As it was our second lesson, we all moved much smoother on the water.
We were supposed to have another sailing lesson the next day, but it got called off because of weather warnings. We ended up in small power boats in groups, getting a tour of the coast from Dave and Lincoln, our instructors.
Sailing camp was awesome! When we first got to the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, we learnt about the different parts of the boat and how to use them effectively to sail. We had a great time on the water, learning how to steer and communicate.
That afternoon, we had another lesson, followed by some shopping at Westfield. After that, we went to the Geelong arcade to do some laser tag and arcade games. That night, we had to go to Coles and cook something in our cabins.
All in all, camp was wonderful. Thank you to Mr. Vine, Mr. Romer and Ms. Thomas for taking us and thank you to all the students, too for the amazing and unforgettable memories.
Careers Expo
We would like to commend our students on how well they engaged with each store holder and represented Kyneton High School.

Sport
The senior boys soccer team had an interesting day in Epping! Due to a last-minute scheduling error, the first game start was moved to 10am and we were unable to arrive in time for kick off and were forced to forfeit the game. The 2nd and final game against Wallan Secondary College was a win for Kyneton 1-0. We were dominant in possession and in general play but were unable to score during the first half.
Sadly, due to the forfeit of the first game, we were unable to progress to the final as the 2nd placed team in the pool. But the players showed great spirit and attitude all day and multiple players persisted through injury – their efforts and commitment to the team was brilliant to see. Even though they only played 1 game, the boys were energetic cheer leaders showing support for the KHS girls team who played on the same ground.

Cross Country
On Friday 17th May a team of 12 Kyneton High School students travelled to Woodlands Historic Park in Greenvale to contest the division Cross Country event.
The event included competitors from two divisions: Woodlands and Mickleham.
The first race Kyneton High students competed in was the 12/13 year old girls event, with Leah Knight racing ahead early and maintaining her pace to earn second place. Placing after Leah were Zaidee Pisani-Lysenko in 7th, Lily Malone in 8th and Kayla Rigby placing 26th.
In the 14 year old boys competition Zach Pearce made an excellent effort to take 4th place, narrowly missing a podium finish. Not far behind in 9th was Mason Hardiman, followed by Harley Thompson in 10th, Flynn Hosking in 15th, Caleb Masden placing 19th.
The final race for Kyneton High students featured a tight race between the 15 year old boys. Jack Denton achieved 4th place, narrowly beating Indigo Saputra in 5th, Barney Ogden arrived soon after in 9th place.
The students were impeccably behaved and very good sports, not to mention pushing themselves to their limits on the running track. We wish them the very best in the next round.
Jane Strickland and Kris Ford
Senior Soccer
Our defence was solid and our midfield had much of the ball but we were unable to be clinical in the final third of the pitch. Some tactical changes at half time continued our domination and allowed James Parnis to score a great header from a corner and take us into the lead. Wallan’s goalkeeper made a number of excellent saves and as such we were unable to extend our lead before the final whistle.
Our senior females just missed out on the final after winning a game and going close in the next. Bronte Randle was able to kickstart our fight with an amazing goal on the run. Both teams led by example and had a great day out!
Senior/Intermediate Netball
On Monday 6th of May, we had four teams of students consisting of 44 students go and compete at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury for inter-school Netball.
We had two teams at senior level and two teams at intermediate level one of each for boys and girls. There was an eager buzz when we arrived as everyone was keen to get on the court. The day started with a win from the intermediate girls who demonstrated flexibility and all-round talent, followed by a win from the senior boys.
When the senior girls started later in the day, they were quick to show they meant business. Across all our teams there were multiple wins to celebrate. Our intermediate girls won 3 out of 4 matches, the senior boys 2 out of 4 matches, the senior girls won 2 and drew the 3rd missing the final on goal difference and our intermediate boys who showcased some brilliant vertical jumps and speed won 2 out of 2 of their matches.
Congratulations to all our competitors on the day. The high-quality sportsmanship demonstrated and support for each other was infallible, with each student making us proud that they were representing Kyneton High School as young and talented sports people in our community.

A Message From The Cancer Council
Many parents and teachers are raising their concerns about children and young people vaping, and asking what can be done. At Cancer Council we too are hearing from parents and community members about their concerns. With support from partners across the health and education sectors, we have developed an easy online form to help people find and write to their federal representatives, and express their support for vaping reforms currently going through parliament. You can find the form at the link here. We encourage you to write to your federal representatives to express your concerns about vaping and show your support for the reforms.
If you have any questions, or for more information, please contact our team at actiononvaping@cancer.org.au.
Positive Behaviour At KHS
Positive behaviours help to create a school climate where all people feel welcomed, connected, safe and ready to learn. Behaviour expectations make up our school rules and are on the KHS Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Matrix.
‘Non-negotiables’ are expected behaviours that are fair and reasonable for all. They make up our school rules. Some examples of ‘non-negotiables’ at KHS include:
– hats off in class
– wear school uniform
– bags and phones in lockers
Each day, students are informed of an expected behaviour during their Period 2 class. During this session, students are shown how they can achieve this behaviour and staff explain their responsibility in helping and supporting students. It is made clear that warnings are given alongside further consequences that reflect our school policy.
This week we have discussed behaviours such as:
– expected uniform
– phones must be in lockers
– being organised for learning
– appropriate use of toilets
– using the canteen
In each newsletter you will be able to read the school expected behaviours that have been covered for that fortnight. Please reach out to your child’s Home Group Teacher, Year Level Leader or Celene Black if you have any questions or would like to chat further.

Looped
During the Summer of 1965, celebrated actress Tallulah Bankhead entered a Los Angeles recording studio to re-record (or “loop”) just one line of dialogue from her final film ‘Die, Die My Darling’. What should have taken about 8 minutes ended up taking 8 hours.
Playwright Matthew Lombardo, using a great deal of theatrical licence, offers us a hilarious yet sympathetic guesstimation as to what may have happened in that room on that day.
