From The Assistant Principal
Dear students, parents, carers and staff
And so we come to the end of Term 2! The winter terms can prove challenging in a cold (cool?!) place like Kyneton. It is harder to get going when it is dark and icy in the mornings. Having said that, there have been many highlights to this 11-week term to warm us up as we take a moment to reflect on them.
We have accomplished so much…
- Parent-teacher interviews – it is always a pleasure to welcome our families in to the school
- The annual Athletics Carnival (Go Red Fins!!!)
- Information sessions and tours for prospective families – so many! We are looking at 6 x Year 7 classes in 2025!
- The Year 11 Senior Ball – everyone looking so good!
- IDAHOBIT Day – I may have shed a tear or two at the community flag raising. So proud of our students!
- Addams Family Production Camp *click click*
- The GAT for our Year 12s – well done to all
- HarvestEd program in partnership with Melbourne Uni for our young people in the Student Excellence Program
- Dreamtime Expo Excursion for our Koorie students
- Reconciliation Week activities and flag raising
- Year 9 Morrisby Career Profiling
- Year 10 Exams
- Year 10 Work Experience
- Year 8 Rugby Clinics
- Year 11 Tomorrow Man & Tomorrow Woman Incursions
- Year 9 City Camp
- Year 8 Ninja Incursion
- Year 7 / VCE VM Games Day
- The Year 10 Winter Formal
- Interschool Sports
- Staff Professional Learning on Classroom Mastery
- The Student Leadership Team Free Dress fundraiser for MND research
This is a remarkable list, although it is not comprehensive!
Finishing the term, I was rapt to attend the Music Soirée held this week in my dual roles as Assistant Principal and parent. There were over 30 items on the program, with students from Years 7-12 performing. For me, a particular highlight was the Year 7 band’s performance of ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ by James Brown. Most of the students in the band have only been learning their instrument for a term or so, yet they performed like they’d been playing together for years. My thanks to our instrumental music team – Juli, Russell, Suzy and Andrew – for putting on such a great show, and to Roger for his work getting the stage extension set up and to our Food Tech team for the delicious supper!
Finally, I’d like to acknowledge the day-to-day work that goes on, often unrecognised, that makes Kyneton High School great. The students who take opportunities to learn new knowledge and skills, the teachers who prepare excellent lessons and adapt them to suit students’ learning ‘point of need’ in each of their classes, the education support staff who keep us all buoyant by ensuring the school keeps running and looking good, and to the parents and carers who support their child and the wider school community through getting uniforms and school lunches organised, ensuring alarm clocks are set, ‘reminding’ about homework, giving comfort and support where it is needed, and celebrating the wins along the way. Thank you all!
I wish everybody a happy and restful mid-year break. To those travelling, travel safely, and to those staying home, keep warm!

Winter Soirée
Last night’s soirée was a standing-room-only success and it was an absolute pleasure to see students from Years 7-12 and at all points along the learning journey get up and perform.
A big shout out to our instrumental music students and their teachers; Juli, Suzy, Russell & Andrew, and to Alex Scott and the Production students.
Thanks also to Roj who, along with Andrew, spent the best part of 2 days getting the hall ready and the stage extension up, and to Claire and the Food Tech team for the lovely supper.

Women In STEMM
Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Medicine
RMIT University (Women in STEMM Program) visited Kyneton High School and presented students in Years 7, 8 and 9 with a STEMM workshop. Students participated in learning around refrigeration, robots and rockets.
Relating to refrigeration, students virtually toured a Woolworths store and viewed the new carbon dioxide refrigeration system (replacing the harmful chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs used previously). They used the controls to move around the virtual space, learn about the different parts of the system and how temperature is modified, depending on the requirements of the store. Students even made it behind the scenes to see the control room and the roof (including all the solar panels).
Students also explored robotics using Sphero robots. They used block coding to create and navigate an obstacle course (See photos). This required trial, error and reflection to improve and perfect their code.
A group of our older students also got the chance to explore rocket design, sustainability and flight paths by creating and launching their own paper rockets.
The big message from the visiting team to students was that there are a variety of pathways for students after they move on from High School through Vocational and Higher Education. Students were shown some of the pathways they may pursue in the field of STEMM and many students were talking about their future careers after they left the workshop.

HarvestEd
At our weekly Year 8 assembly we celebrated the dedicated students who have been participating in the HarvestED program run by the University of Melbourne.
The program is designed for students in Years 7 to 9 to build their knowledge of innovations in agriculture, to promote sustainability and to utilise the design thinking framework to understand local issues and generate possible solutions. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to participate.

Fashion And Design
Students have been learning to use a pattern to sew a pair of pyjama pants for themselves. They have had to learn skills such as measuring themselves correctly, establishing a grain line for their fabrics, consider pattern placement making sure it is all running in the same direction, and ensuring that the length of the pattern will fit them and then adjust accordingly. They have been working in pairs to help with the measuring and double checking with fabric cutting.
After they transferred their templates and cut out their pieces, they had to follow a detailed set of instructions to construct their pj’s. During this process they have practiced their sewing machine skills and have been introduced to using an overlocker. The students have also had to learn how to top stitch on hems and insert elastic in their waistband. It has been a great experience for them all and their joy at completing something they can wear is fantastic.

Year 10 Physical Sciences
Year 10 Physical Sciences competed Cycle 3 by writing, producing and shooting a short video to try and explain the Vastness of Space. Students took different approaches but a great set of final videos was produced demonstrating creativity, hard work, technical skills and most impressive of all, excellent team work.

Library News
Displays to inspire
We have 2 display boards in our Library and these are where we try to inspire our readers with engaging and fun displays of books. Hopefully some of these books will become their favourites!
Clare from Aesop’s Attic kindly donated some books to our Library last week. I know they will be well read, so a very big ‘thankyou’ to Clare for supporting our students and their reading!
Library activities
The Library has been very popular at recess and lunchtimes with students trying to escape the cold. Games, puzzles, colouring and other activities are available to keep them occupied. Here are some of our kids enjoying their Library time!

Cross Country
Mason Hardiman was selected to attend the Regional Cross Country event on Wednesday 19th June. We are super proud of Mason’s efforts. He didn’t go through to the next stage but had a great time of 12 minutes and 9 seconds. Well done Mason!
Basketball
Our Senior Boys competed at the Inter school basketball event in Broadmeadows on Monday the 24th of June. The Senior Boys had a very busy day playing 3 games. We beat Sacred Heart in our first game 21-16, which was a great start to the day. We unfortunately lost to Mt. Ridley in our second game, it was a great game and we were really making them work for the win. Our last game was against Craigieburn which went down to the wire. We finished the day beating them by 5 points. All students who attended tried hard and worked well together. Our MVP of the day was Matthew Black whose defence was a highlight. His defence was the groundwork of our wins. Our sharp shooter was Scott Jowett who had a solid game in the last. Special mention to Dylan Porter who was awarded captaincy for his efforts at training and he led by example on game day. Overall it was a super day!
Mr Eddy
Touch Football
The Year 8s were lucky enough to compete in a touch football program during their PE lessons over the last 4 weeks.
This program was externally run by a professional touch football umpire and coach, who provided students with an opportunity to learn about the rules of touch football and develop key skills.
The program prepares students to play a full game of touch football.
This program was great fun and students really enjoyed it! Special thanks to Giancarlo from Touch Football Australia for running this program.
Mr Eddy
Badminton
Students from Year 7 and 8 competed in the divisional inter-school Badminton competition last Friday 21st June. They participated in a proud and supportive manner and built a great rapport as they encountered some quite experienced Badminton players. The high quality of the competition was of real note to our players who, in some cases, had not really played much badminton before the trials a few weeks earlier.
One of our teams almost made the final! Our Year 7 girls were a single game away from taking a spot in the final game of the competition with 2 wins out of 3.
Congratulations to all of our students who have competed and created a positive memory of the experience.
Mr Andrea
Netball
On Wednesday 26th of June, 3 teams of netballers headed to Sunbury to compete against other teams in the division. We were off to a ripper start with wins across the board for the Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Girls and Junior Boys netball teams.
The Year 8 girls lost their second match by a considerable margin, to the team who ended up the winners of the day but came back for a win to finish off with everyone supporting each other and keeping the team morale high.
The junior boys lost their second match by a close 3 goals, demonstrating top notch teamwork and communication on the court.
The Year 7 girls went on to succeed in their second match, showcasing their flexibility across the court and sharing time amongst them in a variety of positions. They lost their last match of the day, despite their best efforts and received a compliment from the other team that they had been the most challenging of their competitors all day.
Overall, it was a really positive day, and many students are showing enthusiasm to start training in preparation for next year. Special mention to Ms Towers who spent time coaching the Year 7 girls but was unable to attend on the day and a big thank you to Ms Ford and Mr Oliveri for coaching the other teams.

A Message From The Cancer Council
Many parents and teachers are raising their concerns about children and young people vaping, and asking what can be done. At Cancer Council we too are hearing from parents and community members about their concerns. With support from partners across the health and education sectors, we have developed an easy online form to help people find and write to their federal representatives, and express their support for vaping reforms currently going through parliament. You can find the form at the link here. We encourage you to write to your federal representatives to express your concerns about vaping and show your support for the reforms.
