Performing Arts

Participation in music and drama helps students build confidence, creativity and teamwork while developing valuable performance and communication skills.

Whether learning an instrument, performing with an ensemble or taking to the stage, students discover new talents, form lasting friendships and experience the joy of creating together. Below you’ll find more information about the many ways students can participate in the performing arts at Kyneton High School.

Instrumental Music

Our Instrumental Music Program allows students to take part in individual or group music lessons with experienced, professional teachers during the school day. Students are withdrawn from class on a rotating timetable so that they don’t miss the same class from week to week.

Students can choose to learn from a wide variety of instruments, and our teachers all ensure that they meet the student at their level and encourage them to pursue their own interests and musical styles. We support students to take both AMEB and ANZCA exams if they wish.

Students are encouraged to perform whether they are beginners or a few years in to their musical journey. We run Musical Soirees and lunch time performances at school, and support students to perform outside of school as well.

Students can choose to learn piano, keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe) and brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, tuba) through the school. We also have a visiting teacher who teaches violin and cello.

Information about how to sign up is provided through enrolment and in the school newsletter.

Music Engagement and Ensembles Program

Students in Year 7 have an opportunity to engage in a ‘taster’ program where they can try out a variety of different instruments along with their friends in a safe and non-judgemental environment.

For those who wish to take things further, they become part of the Music Ensembles program.

Students are supported to form bands and ensembles with their peers, to select and rehearse songs that they enjoy, to write their own music and to learn the skills of performance. From this program, students perform in the school Soirees, as well as in assemblies, and the community. Some of our bands have performed at Major Tom’s in Kyneton, in the Music in the Sticks Youth Battle of the Bands, the Tylden Primary School Youth Stage and at the Macedon Ranges & Mount Alexander Shire’s Pride Formal.

Through this program, students can also access engaging incursions and excursions, such as songwriting workshops, seeing performances and performing at our local primary schools.

Drama Program

All Year 7 and 8 students experience drama through their Arts Rotation subjects. For those who love it and want to develop their performance or technical skills further, they can enrol in classroom-based drama electives and become involved in drama groups or production.

Our drama students perform for students and staff, as well as the broader community through the school Soirees, Production performances and at the school’s Awards Night.

Performing Arts Tour

At the end of the school year, a group of our music and drama students take part in a multi-day music tour to destinations in Victoria. They rehearse together, build a program for their performances, and then tour primary schools and play and perform to the students in celebration of the end of the school year.

This is an excellent and fun opportunity for the students to build and strengthen friendships, interact with unfamiliar audiences and to really refine their performance skills.
