18th October 2024
From The Principal
Dear Parents, Carers, and Students
I am delighted to share that we have had a tremendous start to the term! The highlight has undoubtedly been our recent Twilight Market, which saw a remarkable turnout of community members supporting the food and market stalls, along with the amazing Show ‘n’ Shine event. The atmosphere was truly buzzing, filled with lots of smiles, people catching up with each other for a chat, and enjoying the great variety of items on display.
The evening was made even more special by a diverse range of musical performances from our talented students, alongside an impressive showcase by our very own staff band. It was heartwarming to see such creativity and talent on display, and so enthusiastically supported by our community audience.
A special acknowledgement and thank you goes to our Year 12 VCE Vocational Major (VM) students, who undertook the Twilight Market as part of their Unit 4 Personal Development Skills project. Their commitment and perseverance, along with the incredible support from their dedicated VM teachers, led by Gareth Rowe, were key to the event’s success. I am confident that this experience will become one of their lifelong memories, illustrating the power of teamwork and effort.
We are immensely grateful to our community for joining us and making the Twilight Market and Show ‘n’ Shine such a resounding success. It is clear that this event has become bigger and better this year, with the potential to be a mainstay of the community calendar in the future; I am proud to see our VM students contributing so meaningfully to the strength of our local community.
Tonight, we have another huge occasion for the school, The Arts Evening. On show will be the highlights of our students’ arts, design, music, drama and media achievements this year, and we are all looking forward to this celebration in the Ngurrak building.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our next event!
Warm regards,
Ana Rees
Principal

COLUMNS 2024
Big bright and bouncy, just like us!
Some sneak preview pages below, torn out of this year’s Columns (not really, it hasn’t been printed yet) to give you a taste of what’s inside.
Twilight Market
The Twilight Market and Show ‘n’ Shine showcased what our Year 12 VCE-VM Students can do. They all worked together, exhibited leadership skills and interpersonal skills, from the planning stage to the final product.
Here are a few fun facts about the event. We had 9 food vendors, 35 stall holders and 40 vehicles. 2 of our food vendors sold out of food. 6 of the stalls were run by our staff volunteering their time. We had 9 music ensembles showing off their unique musical talents, including the staff band ‘The Fade Outs’. We estimate there were around 1000 people participating in the event. The donations we received from local businesses and community organisations to run the event, the raffle, and silent auction came to a value of $6000. Through the fundraising we have raised just over $7000!
This is a fantastic result, but this is a fraction of what is worth celebrating. We are celebrating the generous contributions of our local businesses and community organisations. We are celebrating the staff for volunteering their time to support the event.
We are celebrating the KHS students who ran stalls independently and performed on the night. We are celebrating the Year 12 VCE-VM students tackling the challenges of organising and running such a large-scale event. Most of all, we celebrate our community coming together to support our local public high school. After all, we are better together!
The 2024 Winner of the KHS designed and fabricated Motorbike Trophy was the ‘chromed out’ 2008 Harley Davidson Softail.
The 2024 Winner of the KHS designed and fabricated Car Trophy was the vintage black Mustang Coupe.
The 2024 Winner of the Bursons Care Bucket was the black and green Jeep Wrangler.

Now in its 2nd year, the annually run KHS VM (formerly VCAL) Show N’ Shine again attracted almost 60 vehicles and in conjunction with hundreds of the local community and beyond!
Many thanks to those in the community that have come out to show off their pride and joy in support of the KHS VM students. See you next year! Mr Hill
Humanities
Kyneton Liveability Study
In Humanities, the Year 7 students have been learning about what makes a town or city a good place to live. They have taken this knowledge to conduct fieldwork in the local area around our school and determine the liveability and walkability of High Street, Kyneton. This included surveying the quality of the roads, sidewalks and shops, measuring the volume of traffic down High Street, and using field sketches and photos to catalogue features of the streetscape.
Ingenuity Under Pressure
The Gallipoli campaign during World War One is one of the most memorable campaigns Australians have been involved with and, for our young country, it was a nation-defining moment in our history. But Gallipoli was a military failure. Over the eight months the ANZACs were stuck on the beaches of Gallipoli Peninsula, they gained no territory yet 8,700 young Australian men lost their lives.
The most successful part of the campaign was the ANZACs evacuation. Retreating from a battlefield is one of the riskiest things an army can do because they are highly vulnerable to attack while they are packing up their weaponry, turning their backs to the enemy, and attempting to escape. It was estimated at the time that up to 30,000 men may be lost during the Gallipoli retreat.
Fortunately, a young Australian, William Scurry, came up with a brilliant invention. He designed a ‘drip’ rifle that used water dripping from one can to another can to pull the trigger and fire the rifle at random. The ANZACs set up a long row of drip rifles along their trenches and, under the cover of darkness, the ANZACs quietly packed up and evacuated. The opposing soldiers had no idea an evacuation was underway because they thought they were still under active fire.
Thanks to William Scurry’s invention, the retreat from Gallipoli went down in history as the only evacuation during which not a single life was lost.
Year 9 under intense pressure, but quite clearly ingenious
The Year 9 Humanities students have been learning about the Gallipoli campaign and this amazing story of Australian ingenuity. In class, they had the chance to test their own problem-solving skills by setting up dripping contraptions that used a pin to pop a balloon.

Year 10 Driver Education
On the 14th of October, 65 Year 10 students caught a bus to the Melbourne Museum to complete the Road to Zero program. This excursion worked in conjunction with our Year 10 curriculum for cycle 5. The Road Smart program used Interactive immersive technology to guide students through a series of experiences that engaged them in thinking about how they can be part of the solution to eliminating road trauma. The day was broken into 2 parts, interactive TV ad making and working through the immersive and exploratory gallery showcasing the latest in multi-sensory interactive technologies. The students learnt a lot across the day and it was a great experience for our students.
Energy Breakthrough
Just Around The Corner
With less than 40 sleeps away, students, with the guidance and support of staff; are working hard on their fitness and the preparation for the presentation, as well as working through the construction processes involved in building the two trikes in preparation for the Energy Breakthrough being held on 22nd to 24th November.
In addition to the preparation for the event, students learn to develop skills such as resilience, confidence, initiative, determination and commitment and how this can be used beyond the Energy Breakthrough and in an array of opportunities. A key component of the Energy Breakthrough challenge is the environmental benefits, so students also increase their awareness of the role we can play in helping to improve our school and community environment and teaching their peers and other students about what we can do to help impact positively.
For this amazing program to run, we require the commitment from staff, students, families and local businesses.
The team is seeking local businesses to generously support our KHS racing teams and school program to ensure the continued provision of the program that enhances student engagement, connectivity, and learning through our sponsorship packages. The team is also seeking In-Kind donations to help have the best experience possible for both teams.

Regional Athletics
We were lucky enough to send 7 students through to the Regional Athletics event on the 4th of September. These 7 students were elected to attend due to their efforts at the Divisional event. All of these students tried hard against other students from the Mickleham Division. We had some success on the day with Jack Denton and Zac Wood receiving third medals for their events. Year 7 student Amelie Yates received a second medal for her high jump event. We are super proud of their efforts.

So Dramatic!
Next Stage Drama Incursion
Next Stage Drama program was so much fun! We had the opportunity to work with other kids interested in drama, and branch out. We learned new drama skills and worked on our theatrical skills. It was such a kind, inclusive space and I loved it!
Clementine Nelms Year 7
The Next Stage Drama program was a great experience to be a part of as it allowed me to connect to others who I would not usually work with. It was a privilege to be a part of this.
Stan Doxey Year 7
Today we had Rebecca from Drama Victoria run the Next Stage Drama program for a selected group of students. We ran through various collaborative exercises and performed multiple pieces to the class. Everyone had a fabulous time and it was super fun to work on our acting skills which will be helpful for our Into The Woods auditions.
Imogen Fisher Year 9
This workshop was so fun and refreshing for me, as since production ended, it is rare for me to work with other drama kids. I loved having this creative outlet.
Eden Levi Year 10
The Next Stage Drama program was really fun, it was the highlight of my week. We did lots of fun activities and I really grew in my confidence.
