Learning Technologies and ICT at Kyneton High School

Kyneton High School treats eLearning as an important element the modern classroom.

All students are expected to have some form of computer or netbook device with them in class and it should be seen as part of their normal classroom kit that includes their pencil case, books and texts. When students need to use specialised software such as graphics manipulation or some of our educational software packages, classes will make use of our computer rooms.

Bring Your Own Device Policy

At Kyneton High School, eLearning is considered an integral part of our student’s day-to- day learning. Access to appropriate computers or other electronic devices is central to this priority.

In 2013, we moved to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for the classroom use of computers in the school. This is where students are able to bring their own laptop or netbook to school rather than having to purchase a specific device nominated by the school. Our expectation is that all students will have some form of computer or netbook device available to them in class.

Please refer to our list of BYOD Hardware and Software requirements on the range of devices and software suitable for classroom use. As you will see, the options are quite extensive. Please note that our minimum device requirement is a netbook or larger. After signing the acceptable use agreement, students will be able to connect their device to the Internet when at school and access other key network resources. I strongly suggest that families consider purchasing some form of insurance with their device as the school cannot accept any liability for damage or loss to these devices.

Kyneton High School accepts no responsibility or liability for damage, loss, or repair of these devices.

Acceptable Devices

  • Netbooks
  • Apple Laptops
  • Windows Laptops

Devices Not Acceptable

  • Smart phones i.e. android, windows and iPhones
  • PSP, Play station, Kindles etc
  • Tablet devices including iPads

Approved Operating Systems

  • Windows 10 and above, OS (Apple) Latest version

Required Applications

  • Office suites – containing Word Processing, Spreadsheet & Presentation functions – For example: MS/Office, Apple iWork, Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Google Docs, Docs2Go
  • Antivirus software
  • Web browser – Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome

Advice for Students in Year 7

In choosing a device for your child to bring to school, the important thing to remember is that the device will be used mainly for sourcing information from resources such as the Internet and for use with electronic texts. It will also be used for simple production activities such as writing assignments or creating presentations using Office style apps.

We have updated our policy in response to the changing nature of the use of electronic devices in classrooms, the ready availability of powerful and cheap devices and in acknowledgement of the fact that most of our families already own a device that is suitable for their child to use at school.
