From The Principal
Effective and thriving schools rely on strong governance. Our school council elections have resulted in all parent member vacancies being filled, and we can be assured of both the strength and calibre of the team that governs our school. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of our school community, to thank our out-going School Council President, Mr John Doyle, for his outstanding leadership and service. John’s leadership has guided us through a period of significant capital works which has transformed our school environment. He has been with us throughout two school reviews which have steered an improvement trajectory for an exciting future for Kyneton High School. John’s empathetic and insightful leadership will be missed, but we know that John will remain an active supporter of our school and new council.
Some of our new council members have allowed me to introduce them to our school community in this newsletter; we will introduce other council members in further editions of the newsletter.
Daniel Nelms is a parent of two children and husband of a teacher at Kyneton High. His focus in school council will be on dedication to the school community, upholding community welfare, and ensuring safety for all. Working in challenging and dynamic environments as an emergency services worker, he understands the importance of proactive measures in ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities. His profession has equipped him with skills in crisis management, teamwork, and adaptability, all crucial proficiencies for effective governance. Through school council, he aspires to contribute his expertise towards enhancing safety, promoting mental health initiatives, and championing diversity and inclusivity.
Moira Buchholtz is a Registered Nurse currently working in the area of behaviour support, helping people to improve their quality of life and reduce restrictions. Moira has a strong passion for learning, both her own learning and facilitating others learning; in her spare time she is studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Moira is looking forward to working with the school and the council to make a positive impact for the school community.
Lisa Ohlmus has children in Years 10 and 7, both of whom have attended Kyneton’s public schools since prep. As a former public school teacher and a state school student, she believes in the importance of public education to provide an inclusive education that caters to all learners. Lisa has been deeply involved with Kyneton High School over the last ten years, spearheading campaigns to secure government investment in our school’s facilities. In the last two years she also raised over $10,000 in donations to our school building fund. Lisa has considerable experience in managing school budgets, media and government relations, and event organising.
Sarah Frankland is a Senior Lecturer in Agriculture at the University of Melbourne with a focus on student experience and student learning, particularly self-regulated learning. She also volunteers in the Woodend Landcare group and sits on the Science Schools Foundation board. As well as her educational background she has skills in event management. She regularly organises and runs events for university students around career preparation and industry engagement. Sarah will be involved both in general council and the buildings and grounds subcommittee. She is particularly keen to see the proposed revamp of the kitchen garden come to fruition. This is an important space for a number of educational, wellbeing and sustainability aspects, which are central to the vision of KHS as a school of educational excellence, with inclusivity and sustainability at the heart of the education programs.
My leadership team and staff are extremely well-supported by such depth of commitment and expertise in our school council and we wish them well throughout their term of office.

From The
Student Leadership Team
Report from School Captain Ava Coleman
There has been a lot happening around Kyneton High School,
from team sports, academic excellence and so much more.
In the beginning of the year, the Year 7s settled in quickly, finding their way to their new classes and meeting teachers, friends and other peers around the school. The School Captains noticed a large interest of applications to be accepted into the Student Leadership Team, and there was a high amount of Year 7s participating in many different activities and sports around the school yard. There have been a number of students participating in school volleyball training who are keen to play for Kyneton High School, as well as other sports and interschool activities.
The Year 8s have come back to school with new confidence as they are no longer at the bottom of the school. They are enjoying the new building and also have a high interest in interschool sports.
The Year 9s and Year 10s are having fun all over the school, routinely starting a game of cricket with a rubbish bin, playing soccer on the oval, making teams and playing against each other in volleyball and many other fun activities. There was a lot of participation from this age group in the school swimming carnival, gaining points for their house colours and having fun on the day.
The Year 11s are adjusting to the senior part of the school, and starting off their VCE or VCE VM classes well. They are prepared for the two years ahead of them full of studying, getting an apprenticeship or other achievements. They have started their Senior Ball dance lessons, lead by Ms Wallace, and can’t wait for the Ball to take place in May. During recess and lunch, there is a lot of footy, rugby and American football taking place.
Finally, the Year 12s are ruling the school, and are great role models for the younger year levels. They were very well behaved for their last Swimming Carnival, and dressed up in some great costumes and colours to raise the school spirit. They have been studying hard for their SAC’s, or working hard to complete their coursework to make 2024 a little bit easier for themselves. Many students are taking advantage of going into town during recess and lunchtime, or playing sports such as basketball or volleyball. Already, two teams have competed for interschool volleyball and have made their school proud, as well as a group of 6 girls heading down to St Kilda for the day to be the first to represent their school in beach volleyball. The girls won two out of four games, missing out on finals by one point. The school has been buzzing with activity, from school sports, clubs, recess and lunchtime fun and other great activities that students have participated in.

Another year 7 camp done and dusted! And what an awesome camp it was! On behalf of all the staff we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our FABULOUS YEAR 7S!
For the duration of the camp they showed resilience, leadership and pure kindness to their peers. We had many comments from the Camp Staff praising your children for their enthusiasm and politeness.
The weather was perfect and allowed us all to enjoy each and every activity, especially the water activities!!
Thank you to our amazing staff who went above and beyond!

Music
The Taster Program will continue throughout the semester and there are still plenty of instruments looking for students!! If you’d like to get involved, please contact Mr Zollia at school.
Throughout the term, Year 7 students have been visiting our recently renovated Music Department to try out a range of musical instruments. We have had plenty of interest, with students opting to learn a musical instrument.
We now have a Year 7 Band!!
These students bring with them a love of music and enjoy playing together. Stay tuned for more band news!

Years 7 to 10 P.E.
It has been a great start to PE for Years 7 to 10 so far. The students began the year with fitness testing. This included all students participating in a range of fitness tests to collect data on their current fitness levels of the various fitness components. The tests completed were the beep test, the agility run, the 20 meter sprint, the grip strength, sit and reach, sit ups, push ups, standing long jump, ruler drop and vertical jump.
Most of the students did a great job, really pushing themselves to be the best they could be. We had some amazing results from every class.
We will retest at the end of the year to compare the data / results to evaluate for improvements or areas for improvement in the future.

Year 11 Business Management
Year 11 VCE Business Management students embarked on a sweet journey of learning and entrepreneurship by managing their very own Ice Cream Stall last week. Through dedication and teamwork, they excelled in running all aspects of the business, showcasing remarkable independence and skill by the final shift. A delicious lesson in real-world business management!
Mr Rickwood
Year 12 Physics
Year 12 Physics visited Luna Park for one of the annual Physics Days which are held on site!
Students were able to go on all the rides and connect ideas and learning from their Area of Study 1 on Motion in 2 Dimensions to explain and understand the forces they experienced.
A near universal favourite was the Enterprise ride – a giant centrifuge that starts off horizontal and slowly rotates up to 87 degrees from the ground. Using their force sensors, students were able to work out that during each rotation of the ride they experienced forces that ranged from near weightlessness all the way to 1G (feeling as if they were being pressed down by their own bodyweight!).
Year 10 Physical Sciences
Year 10 Physical Sciences have been investigating forces and aerodynamics through building model rockets in Cycle 1. As part of their learning, they applied knowledge on the concept of impulse (a measure of the change in momentum for the non-science folks out there!) by building contraptions to protect an egg from breaking as it was dropped off the top of the Boomerang balcony! Students were given a budget to purchase supplies such as straws, tape, balloons, cotton balls and paper to build their contraptions with a wide range of designs created – some more successful than others!

Sport
Storm Clinic
On Tuesday morning the Year 11 and 12 Cert 3 Sport and Recreation students took part in a great clinic run by a Melbourne Storm development officer. Despite the heat, he kept the students very engaged in a rugby league skills session. This contributed to the Year 12’s unit – Educate User Groups.
The students were asked to take note of his presentation and delivery style and how he kept them engaged in participating. This included his voice projection, his positioning, the clarity of his explanations and instructions and the overall fun and enjoyment experienced by all students. They were also asked to observe the relevance of his activities and drills determining if they helped students to improve their understanding of the skills required to play a game of rugby league.
Overall the students had a great time and appreciated his time. They gave 100% for 60 minutes. Well done to all involved!

Intermediate Volleyball
Year 11 students also ignited their chemistry studies conducting flame tests of different metals, and using the results to identify an unknown metal. This demonstrates the existence of energy levels within atoms. Hope this fuels their blazing curiosity for the learning ahead!
Our Intermediate Men’s and Women’s volleyball teams ventured out to Epping for this event. These teams have been training hard since last year in preparation for competition day.
Both teams had success on the day and just missed the final by a couple of points. Other staff on the day had nothing but high praise for the quality our students produced. Overall, it was a successful day and the students should be really proud of their efforts.
Coach Swanny
Thursday (7th March) the boys Senior and Intermediate Tennis Team headed out to the Hume Tennis centre. The senior boys faced some tough opponents but continued to give it their best all day. The intermediate boys finished the day in second place, falling just short by 3 games in the final against Hume Central. Both teams demonstrated great sportsmanship and had a great day out representing KHS.

On Friday the 8th of March, six of us Year 12 girls, Freya Laird, Kisha Monleon, Ava Coleman, Grace Tremayne, Leini Kingston and Jen Girvan travelled down to St Kilda beach to participate in beach volleyball. Having only trained on our school volleyball court we felt like we were not at the same level as the other teams. As soon as we hit the sand, we played better than we could have imagined, surprising ourselves with our first win. We went on to win two of the four games we played, missing out on finals by one point. Although we were disappointed, we were all very proud of ourselves and how far we got in the competition, and we celebrated with some body surfing before heading home.

Division Swimming
On Tuesday 12th of March, 15 students travelled to Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre to compete at the Division level swimming event. We had several students compete in individual and relay events, with some excellent results, many placing either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Everyone went home on the day with at least one ribbon in hand. Students could be heard supporting each other from the grandstands, looked the part in our new Kyneton High School swim caps and conducted themselves in a manner that made the school community extremely proud. We will have 8 students going through to compete at the Northern Metropolitan Regional event.

Swimming Sports
At the end of the day the Year 12s organised a staff versus students relay race. Mr Bedford, Mr Hill, Mr Turnbull, Ms Ford, Ms Strickland and Mr Andrea took to the pool to take on Year 12 teams. The teachers showed off their years of experience and beat the Year 12s comfortably.
While the whole school was watching, the admin team worked hard to finalise House points for the day. The Lauriston Cockatoos battled hard all day and flew home with Victory!
School Captain Kisha Monleon and House Captain Steph Sharp held up the cup to applause from whole school. This capped off a great day at the pool.

Our annual Swimming Sports carnival was held at Woodend swimming pool on Friday 1st of March. Students set off from school and arrived at the pool around 9:40am.
The day began quickly with our year 12s completing a lap of honour in their costumes. It was a warm one in Woodend, so students were very eager to get in the pool.
Our marshallers got the students ready for their events and we were off and running.
Students showed great skills and ability in the pool and the admin table was inundated with handing out ribbons.
A number of novelty events were held on the day including chess and games like limbo to get students involved. A whole school dance party erupted when the nut bush and macarena came on over the big speakers.
A special mention needed for all staff who helped with the set up and pack up of this event, along with Ms Galea and Mr Oliveri for running the BBQ. It was a fantastic day and all students looked to have enjoyed themselves. Looking forward to our Athletics Carnival.

Year 12 Cert 3 Sport and Recreation WHS/OHS Checks
In the lead-up to our school swimming sports on Thursday the 22nd of Feb, the Year 12 Sport and Recreation students completed a WHS / OHS check on the Woodend pool as part of their studies in Unit: BSBWHS303 – PARTICIPATE IN WHS HAZARD IDENTIFICATION, RISK ASSESSMENT AND RISK CONTROL.
We travelled to the Woodend Pool with our check lists and did a thorough observation of the premises. Ben (also a former student) from the Macedon Ranges Aquatic Centre was very accommodating and helpful in the process.
The students’ assessment included the following performance evidence to be met:
- participate in selection and use of required methods to identify, report and record hazards
- assess and record risks for identified hazards
- promote and support worker consultation and participation in hazard identification and risk assessment
- participate in developing, selecting and implementing risk control options and plans.
The students did an outstanding job and passed their findings onto the relevant stakeholders. Well done to all involved!!!

Roberta DuBarry Scholarships
Certificate Of Appreciation
On Thursday 7th March, our 2023 Languages award recipient, Kofi Chambers, was hosted to a morning tea by the benefactor of the $1000 scholarship, Roberta DuBarry. This was an opportunity for them to meet and for the school to present a letter and certificate of appreciation to Roberta.
Roberta is a past staff member and taught French language during her many years of service at Kyneton High School. She is a strong advocate for public education and has demonstrated this commitment by sponsoring two significant scholarships, one for Languages and another for Performing Arts, which will be available to students in Year 10 for the next 25 years.
Kofi was accompanied by Indonesian teacher Deryn Mansell and the Principal, Ana Rees.

The joint school production of “The Addams Family” with Gisborne Secondary College has kicked off with great enthusiasm and promise. With a cast of 60 actors and 15 crew members, the rehearsals are buzzing with creativity and energy. As rehearsals progress, it’s evident that the collaboration between schools is not only shaping an amazing rendition of “The Addams Family” but also creating lasting memories and fostering a strong sense community among the talented students involved. I am super proud of all of the KHS students for demonstrating our school values and I look forward to working with them further.

Library News
The Library has been full of students at Recess and Lunchtime making the most of our cheery space. We’ve had colouring-in for International Women’s Day, some fun !!!Surprise Your Eyes!!! booky videos for International Book Day, and plenty of game playing and reading.
We have received a wonderful donation of books From Aesop’ Attic – Clare is so generous and helpful. The students have enjoyed reading these, especially The Bad Guys books!
We have also received our next box of books from Scholastic and the books look fantastic. These will be on our shelves very soon for students to borrow.
Our Book Review Group meets 2-3 times a term to look through, and borrow, our brand new books before they are put out on the shelves. In return we ask that the students then complete a short book review on a slip to be placed inside the book, as a way to promote the books to other students. If your child loves reading, and would like to be a part of this group, please encourage them to come along on Thursday lunchtimes. The meeting days will be advertised on Xuno and by posters in the Library.
Library Blog
Here is a reminder that the Library has a Blog where students can find lots of helpful information related to the subjects they are studying. A link to the Blog can be found on the Library catalogue, and also through the Library link on the School website. And also here! https://ksclibrary.wordpress.com
New information is constantly being added so have a look today and see how useful it is.

Harmony Day
On Thursday 21st March we join in the national acknowledgement of cultural diversity by celebrating Harmony Day and International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Students have the opportunity to:
-complete a lesson about cultural diversity
-complete a task that asks them to be activists in reducing racism
-contribute to a display in the Admin Building foyer and other spaces around the school.
It is a great way to stop and reflect on how we can contribute to a school and community where everyone feels welcomed and included.

KHS STUDENTS QUIZ SHOW SUCCESS
Not KHS students. Image nicked from Bookface.
A team of four students from the Kyneton high school have been successful in winning the first round in the popular television quiz show, “It’s Academic.”
The team comprising Peter Jackson (Woodend), Ian Ruxton (Kyneton) and John McLarty (Macedon) defeated teams from Maroondah high school and Aquinas Boys college.
Sue Pavey, from Kyneton is the teams emergency.
Through their success, the students have won for the school a large two volume dictionary as well as book prizes for themselves.
The show taping will be shown on Channel 7 on October 20.
In order to win their first round, the Kyneton students had to compete in a tense beat-the-buzzer round of questions. A bus load of students went to the taping session.

Phase Out Of Canteen Phone Payments
As a part of the Department and government’s update and reinforcement of the mobile phones in schools policy, we are entering a phase out period for phone payments at the canteen.
Previously, we have allowed students to use their phones to pay at the canteen, as long as they only have it out to pay, and then put it away.
Thanks to the introduction of the Flexischools Canteen App (see instructions below), students are now in a position where they may order and pay for their lunch/recess in advance. The canteen also accepts cash and card payments.
From the beginning of Term 2, phones will no longer be allowed to be used to pay at the canteen.
You can find the Department of Education’s Mobile Phones Student Use Policy here
Note that this is a Ministerial policy formally issued by the Minister for Education under section 5.2.1(2)(b) of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic).
Our local Mobile Phones Student Use Policy can be found here

Positive Behaviour At KHS
Positive behaviours help to create a school climate where all people feel welcomed, connected, safe and ready to learn. Behaviour expectations make up our school rules and are on the KHS Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Matrix.
‘Non-negotiables’ are expected behaviours that are fair and reasonable for all. They make up our school rules. Some examples of ‘non-negotiables’ at KHS include:
– hats off in class
– wear school uniform
– bags and phones in lockers
Each day, students are informed of an expected behaviour during their Period 2 class. During this session, students are shown how they can achieve this behaviour and staff explain their responsibility in helping and supporting students. It is made clear that warnings are given alongside further consequences that reflect our school policy.
This week we have discussed behaviours such as:
– expected uniform
– phones must be in lockers
– being organised for learning
– appropriate use of toilets
– using the canteen
In each newsletter you will be able to read the school expected behaviours that have been covered for that fortnight. Please reach out to your child’s Home Group Teacher, Year Level Leader or Celene Black if you have any questions or would like to chat further.
